John “Johnny” Hugh Waters of Selma, Alabama passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Princeton Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 67.
Johnny was born in Georgia on March 3, 1957 to the late Calvin “Cotton” E. Waters and Patsy Stephens Waters
Johnny was a former owner of Waters, Inc. here in Selma. His ability to operate and maneuver heavy equipment was like none other. He was an absolute asset to the railroad community. If it needed fixing, he could do it. He dedicated the majority of his life to hard work and making sure things got done the right way.
He loved his friends and especially his family. Johnny “Papa” enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He leaves behind his children, Kellie (David) Odom, Dr. Joseph H. Waters, MD, and Shannon (Coby) Atchison; step-daughters, Haley Thornton and Shaley Thornton; grandchildren, Stephen Ratliff, Daniel Ratliff, Harper Atchison, and John Brooks Atchison; mother, Patsy Waters; siblings, Ricky (Teresa), Terry (Kellee) Waters, and Sharon Waters; his loving companion, Melina Galyen; mother of his children, Karen Huffman Waters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Calvin “Cotton” E. Waters and his wife, Jeanne Waters.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home of Selma with Shane D. Ogle officiating.
Interment will follow at Pineview Memory Gardens in Valley Grande, Alabama.
Pallbearers will be David Harris, Alan Shumate, James Moorer, Steve Todd, David Odom, and Stephen Ratliff.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Bruner, Chuck Utsey, and Lowell Butts.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the American Heart Association.
