John Edward Johnson, 93, of Decatur, went to be with the Lord on November 1, 2023, surrounded by his family at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be held Monday, November 6, at 10:30 AM at Boiling Springs Cemetery.
John was born in June of 1930, in
Blue Mound, Illinois, son of Clyde and Elra Johnson. John enlisted in the military and faithfully served his country in both the Navy and Marine Corps. While in the Marines, he served in the Korean War. He married the love of his life, Darlene Spalding, in February of 1954. Together they had three children, twin boys, Terry and Jerry, and one daughter, Penny. John worked hard in the manufacturing world to provide for his family. He led a Boy Scout troop for the twins, was a skilled carpenter, loved working at his church, and was a faithful and loving husband, father, and grandfather. John was above all a servant of the Lord and loved caring for people. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Decatur and spent his days taking people to hospital visits, mowing yards, working at the church, and spending time with his family.
John is survived by his son, Jerry (Bev) Johnson of Texas, daughter, Penny Doolin of Decatur, grandchildren: Alyssa (Chris) Merritt, of Blue Mound, Katelyn (Matt) Cella of Texas, Ryan (Sarah) Johnson of Texas, Michael Doolin of Decatur, great grandchildren, Caden, Austin, Tommy, Connor, Charles, and Naomi, sister, Linda Sarver, brother, Randy (Nancy) Johnson, both of Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene, son Terry, his parents, and 3 brothers.
John's family is beyond thankful for the godly legacy he left them. In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church.
