Mr. John J. Kearney

John J. Kearney 1923-2009 John J. Kearney, 85, passed away on February 24, 2009. He was born in Santa Monica on June 10, 1923 and was a Long Beach resident for over 60 years. John served with the U.S. Army Air Force 457th Bombardment Group during World War II, completing 35 missions aboard B-17's as a ball turret gunner. John proudly served as a Lon Beach Fire Fighter for 28 years. At on tim he served as President of the Retired Police and Firefighters Association. John was an active member of the community running for Mayor of Long Beach in 1988. He regularly contributed articles to the Press-Telegram and received awards for his "Letters to the Editor". He was a member of the Mended Hearts and the Elks Club. He and his wife, Rita, were the founding members of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church. John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rita, six children, John (Margaret), Dennis, Karen Henriksen (Sven), Kristine Tonsich (Nick), Partick and Erin Kearney; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and twin sister, Katherine Jewell; preceded in death by his treasured dogs, Muffy and Ralphie. John will be missed by many. The funeral Service will be held at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church on Monday, March 2nd at 10:00am with the graveside service to follow at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach.
