John Kontek Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pedersen Ryberg Funeral Home on Jan. 13, 2026.
John J. Kontek, age 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Darlene (née D'Andrea) Kontek; his caring children Lisa (Chuck) Blazevich, Laura (Dave) Tanny, and Johnny Kontek; his adored grandchildren Michael, Jack, and Ryan Blazevich, Nick, Will, and Kate Tanny, and Tyler Kontek. John was the beloved son of the late Bruno and Florence Kontek; loving brother of Jim (Mary) Kontek, Mike (Kris) Kontek; fond brother-in-law of Denise D'Andrea. Cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Born and raised on the northwest side of Chicago, John later made Elmhurst his home for 56 years. He was a loyal and dedicated employee of Schiele Graphics, where he worked for an incredible 51 years. Proud of his Polish heritage, John learned to play the accordion as a child. Over the years, he entertained at many gatherings, often acting as a "conductor" encouraging everyone to join in on songs most notably E-I-E-I-O. John was a people person. He was known for his humor, out-going nature, and 'tell it like it is' personality. He had a gift for striking up conversations with anyone.
John loved fishing with his son, friends, and grandkids. He even organized a yearly fishing derby at Deep Lake, Illinois, which many participated in even if they didn't like to fish. John made it a fun time. Las Vegas and Culver, Indiana were among his favorite travel destinations. John was a fan of all Chicago sports teams (yes, even the White Sox) but ultimately loved watching his kids and grandkids play their various sports. As some would say, he was an enthusiastic fan. He was also known for cooking up a fantastic breakfast for his family, including his famous dish "The Special".
Of all his hobbies and accomplishments though, John would be most proud of his dedication and love to his high school sweetheart, Darlene, his three close-knit children, and seven well-rounded grandchildren. He was deeply loved by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. at Pedersen Ryberg Funeral Home, 435 North York Street, Elmhurst, IL. Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 426 West Avenue, Elmhurst, IL. Interment private.

God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. John, you were always a fair honest and good supervisor to me for 17 years. We had a lot of good laughs. Rest in peace J.K.

I was one of the ST. Thecla 'Goofy Guys' that hung around with John and played ball, hockey, went bowling, hung around Imlay park, and was the drummer for our polka band that entertained the nuns at school activities. John played accordion and was the only one of us with any talent. We shared a great childhood in the old neighborhood. I feel sorry for the youth of today not having a time like ours. We would spend hours in the forest preserves throwing rocks in the river in summer and tobogganing on the Jensen slides in winter. Time of our lives. Rest in peace old pal. Your polka pal, Roger Powell
