John Lansing Elliott Callaghan Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 14, 2025.
John Lansing Callaghan (Lance)
Lance Callaghan was born in Duluth, Minnesota on November 4, 1937, the son of the late Dr. Desmond H. and Martha Callaghan of Hayward, WI. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen, and daughters Mary (Mark Bergeron) of Minneapolis, MN, and Kathleen (Ben White) along with granddaughter Fiona Ryan and step-grandchildren Abby and Parker White, all of Middleton, WI. He leaves behind two dear sisters, Mary (Lester Wanninger) and Jane (Larry Pederson), who joined him in telling stories of their childhood in Hayward.
Lance graduated from Hayward High School in 1955 where he was an outstanding prep golfer and led Hayward to two conference championships and to the state high school tournament in 1955. He graduated from the College of St. Thomas with a B.S. in Biology and received an M.S. in Applied Math and Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis.
He worked for over thirty years at UNISYS and served on the adjunct faculty at St. Thomas from 1971-2001. He was an active volunteer at the Science Museum and the Minnesota History Center, and tutored elementary school students in math at the St. Odilia School for many years.
Lance was a lover of words and an avid reader. He prided himself on keeping a pristine lawn. His unwavering loyalty to Notre Dame football was legendary among family and friends, and he approached each season as a true devotee. He loved music and took up the piano in retirement. Those who knew him well will remember his subtle wit and his competitive spirit during games of cribbage, where his strategic mind and gentle humor were always on display.
Gifts in memory of Lance Callaghan can be made to St. Odilia School or a preferred charity of your choice. https://www.osvhub.com/stodilia/giving/funds/funeral-memorial-gifts.
