Mr. John Lawson Jr. was born on June 1, 1935, in Lake City, South Carolina. He was the oldest son born to the late John and Rosa Lawson. Mr. Lawson peacefully departed his life to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 28, 2025, in
Columbia, South Carolina.
John received his early education in the public schools of Lake City, South Carolina, where he excelled academically and graduated as the salutatorian of his high school class. His dedication and determination earned him a full college scholarship. However, because of his loving and selfless nature, he chose to remain home to care for his parents during their illness. This act of compassion and responsibility reflected the kind of man he was -- one whose heart always guided his actions.
Mr. Lawson was a devoted and faithful member of Zion Chapel Baptist Church #1. Throughout his many years of service, he demonstrated unwavering commitment as a generous giver and an active participant in the Men's Group. His faith and devotion to the Lord were evident in how he lived and served others.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Mr. Lawson was known for his kind heart, humility, and steadfast spirit. He was a hardworking man who took great pride in providing for his family. His professional journey began at BinSwanger Glass as a glass installer, later continuing with Omni Glass, where he served faithfully until his retirement. Even after retiring, he continued to share his warmth and joy with others as a greeter at Wal-Mart, where his welcoming smile and friendly wave brightened the day of every person who entered. Mr. Lawson touched countless lives through his generosity, humility, and genuine love for people. He never met a stranger -- everyone who crossed his path found a friend in him. In his leisure time, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working crossword puzzles, reading, and watching the news. These simple joys reflected his thoughtful nature and his love for learning and family.
When asked by his grandchildren about the life he lived, Mr. Lawson fondly recalled his journey with gratitude and peace. He often reflected on how good God had been to him, expressing that his greatest joy came from the love of his family and the opportunity to see his children and grandchildren grow and thrive. That vivid memory continues to serve as a lasting reminder of his wisdom, humility, and the deep love he carried in his heart. As we gather to celebrate his life, we remember the love, kindness, and compassion he so freely shared with those around him.
Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rosa Lawson; his beloved wife, Mrs. Della Mae Lawson; and his son-in-law, Mr. Kenneth Bates.
Those who are left to cherish his memory include his eldest daughter, Mrs. Brenda Bates; his son, Mr. Alphonso (Shirley) Lawson; daughters Mrs. Sharon (Anson) Stroman and Trina (James) Isaac. He is also survived by his brother, Mr. Albertus "Harry" McDowell; he also leaves to cherish his legacy of fourteen (14) grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, and twelve (12) great-great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and devoted friends. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
