John Lenz Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 23, 2025.
John Werner Lenz, 88, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 16, 2025, after a long battle with heart disease. Born on January 30, 1937, in Kiel, Germany, John immigrated to the United States as a young boy with his mother and siblings, building a life defined by grit, service, and devotion to family.
A standout student-athlete, John was an All-American cross-country runner in high school. He later served in the United States Navy, where he provided aviation instrument training. John married Barbara Ann Lenz, who preceded him in death, and together they made their home in Santa Barbara, California, where they raised their family.
John spent many years with the Santa Barbara Police Department, serving as a homicide detective until his retirement. Even then, he wasn't one to slow down-he went on to work in private securities. Above all, John was a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who treasured time with his family and showed his love through steady presence, hard work, and unwavering commitment.
John is survived by his grandson Joseph Swezea and his wife Tabitha, his grandchildren Olive, Willow, Hazel, and Rowan; and many other surviving family members.
At this time, the family has elected for private services. Though John may be gone, his spirit and memory will live on in the loving family he leaves behind,. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of John, please visit our Tree Store.
