Mr. Mackey, 76, of Meridian, died Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, following an extended illness.
Danny was born September 28, 1949, in Meridian, MS to John and Agnes Mackey. He began his career with The Meridian Fire Department in 1972, as a firefighter, retiring as a Captain after over 20 years of service. He then began his second career, in 1992, as a driver with Southern Pipe and Supply. Even after his retirement of 30 years, he continued working part-time. He enjoyed visiting Southern Pipe stores all over the Southeast, even when he was traveling on vacation. Danny enjoyed being outdoors. He loved to show off all his flowers blooming in the yard, building bird houses, keeping them well fed, and watching the birds come each year. He also loved fishing and spent many days at Twitley Branch Campground, which was one of his favorite things to do. Danny enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren about outdoor life.
Danny loved classic cars, traveling to car shows, attending hot air balloon, and other festivals. He especially enjoyed traveling with Joane, spoiling her with countless beach trips. He loved Southern Gospel Music, often traveling to support groups both near and far, as well as attending numerous National Quartet Conventions in Pigeon Forge, TN. Danny’s favorite title was “Papaw” to his seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, with one on the way, who were his pride and joy.
Danny is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Joane Mackey; children, Jay Mackey (Teresa), Dawn Hull (Ryan), and Joy Sharp (Jason); grandchildren, Courtney Rosewall (Josh), Matthew Mackey (Emily), Jordyn Toenges (Lars), Brooks Hull (Lily), Madelyn Sharp, Luke Sharp, and Rhett Sharp; great-grandchildren, Alana Rosewall, Mackenzie Rosewall, and Tate Daniel Toenges; and Mary Elouise Mackey, due in May 2026; his brother, Richard Mackey; and his sister, Libby Wilson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Mr. Mackey is preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes Mackey.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Matthew Mackey, Brooks Hull, Luke Sharp, Rhett Sharp, Josh Rosewall, and Lars Toenges. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Meridian Fire Department Retirees, and his Southern Pipe and Supply Family.
The Mackey Family suggest, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made as donations to St. Jude Chidlren’s Hospital or to East Mississippi Animal Rescue.
