Schertz Funeral Home and Crematory - SchertzJohn Ulon Marrs, age 91, of San Antonio, TX passed away on January 23, 2026 at Brookdale Assisted Living in San Antonio, TX. Born in 1934 in Greenfield, IA; a son of U.H. and Louise Marrs. He was then united in marriage to Ruth Ann Arends on September 8, 1957. John graduated from Ft. Dodge Sr. High. John attended a small college in SE Iowa, Iowa State and Iowa Central Community College. As a business man, John partnered then owned Brady Moving and Storage in Ft. Dodge. He was a member of the chamber of commerce.
John was a Christian who served in many capacities throughout his life. He was a Deacon, Elder, and served in the Missouri Presbytery. He was a part of the Methodist Lay Witness Program at Trinity United Methodist in Ft. Dodge. He lead groups for Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
John served his community often during his life. He was a member of the Gallon Club 4 times for blood donation. He also was a member and often a leader for service organizations like Masons, SERTOMA, and Fort Dodge Booster Club. Notably, John was instrumental in setting up a Domestic Abuse Hotline in Fort Dodge, IA. In Camdenton, MO, he took calls while organizing the 24/7 hotline for Citizens Against Domestic Violent (CADV).
Everyone knew of John’s love of music. John sang all his life, often spontaneously, anywhere he happened to be. He was a part of school choirs, glee clubs, church, and Summer Stock musicals; He also sang solos at church into his 90s. John loved sports. He played football and basketball in high school. He was also a Big Ten football referee. He loved the Iowa State Cyclones, U of I Hawkeyes, KC Chiefs and St Louis Cardinals. Other favorite activities were card games (especially hand and foot), fishing, golf, traveling, and eating Ruth’s cooking.
He was survived by daughter, Deana Hill (Steve); brother David Marrs; daughter - In - Law, Linda Marrs; grandchildren, Jessica Walkup (Jay), Austin (AJ) Marrs, Meredith Thompson (Delton) and Kayla Johnson (Ashton); great grandchildren, Jackson and Jase Walkup, Logan, Connor and Kaylee Thompson. John was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, son: Dr. Scott D. Marrs D.O.; parents: UH and Louise Marrs, sister Mary (Marrs) Maly, and brother Steve Marrs.
Celebration of life is Saturday April 11, 2025 at Schertz Funeral Home. Friends will be received at 10:30 am with the service at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow. This will be livestreamed. The link will be provided on social media and through direct contact with the family.
