John Wade Matheny passed away on January 27, 2026, at Maury Regional Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his family.
Wade dedicated his life to service—first to his country and then to his community. He proudly served in the United States Navy, and for more than two decades, he faithfully served the citizens of Maury County through the Maury County Sheriff’s Department, from which he retired. His commitment to public service was not just a career but a calling, and he was deeply respected by those who worked alongside him and those he served.
Wade was a man of great character and warmth. Known for his fun-loving personality and quick wit, he was a natural jokester who could bring laughter to any room. He truly never met a stranger and welcomed everyone with kindness and an open heart. A devoted member of his community, John also held a lifelong passion as a die-hard Vanderbilt (Vandy) fan, a loyalty he wore proudly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Katie Nix Matheny; his children, Pam (Jake) Birkel and Johnny (Melissa) Matheny; his grandchildren, John Robert Birkel, Will (Amanda) Birkel, Cole (Selena) Holder, and Brett Holder; and his great-grandchildren, Liam Birkel, Milo Birkel, Kaylee Holder and Naomi Holder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Viola Matheny, and his sisters, Dorothy Hight and Bobbie Lee.
A memorial service will be held at Williams Funeral Home, Columbia location, on Friday, January 30. The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with a Celebration of Life service to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Mike Roberts officiating.
Wade Matheny will be remembered for his unwavering service, his generous spirit, and the joy he brought to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
