John Bernard Mayer

1940 - 2025

John Mayer of Solomons, Maryland, passed away on August 24th surrounded by family. A true captain in every sense of the word, he lived with a big heart, steady strength, and a spark of adventure - whether at the helm of his boat, in business, or in life. He shared his love of the water through hundreds of charter trips on the Chesapeake Bay, celebrated offshore victories including the White Marlin Open, and traveled the world with the International Game Fish Association.

In 1964, John founded Creative Sign Systems and led it for nearly 50 years with grit, humor, and kindness. He believed in hard work, giving opportunities to others, and often repeated his favorite phrase: "Just do it." Beyond business and boating, he was known as a devoted husband, father, and mentor whose smile and generosity touched countless lives.

John is survived by his wife, Karen, and his sons, John, Brian, and Troy. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 11th, from 2:00-4:30 PM at the Mayer home in Solomons (parking at Annmarie Garden's grass lot with shuttle service).
