John M. McKisson, 79, of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024, in his family home.
Services for John will be on Thursday February 22nd, 2024. Visitation will be at 10:30am at Zachary United Methodist Church in Zachary, Louisiana. Funeral service will commence at 11am. Interment to follow at the Louisiana National Cemetery in Zachary, Louisiana.
John was born in Alma, Arkansas on November 11, 1944, to Theron Thomas McKisson and Ethel Mae Beight McKisson. He grew up the son of a Methodist Minister. John moved with his family to several states as his father served the Lord in numerous churches. He was the youngest of eight children and was known as ‘Little’ Johnny. He graduated from Grayson High School in North Louisiana in 1962.
John proudly served in the United States Air Force from December 1966 – December 1970 in the 318th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. He was based in McChord AFB Tacoma, WA and worked as an aircraft mechanic on the Convair F-106 Delta Dart.
In 1968, John met Roberta “Bobbi” in Denver, Colorado at Fitsimmons Army Hospital where Bobbi was visiting a cousin. After meeting John, she became a frequent visitor to the hospital. Before being shipped out, John asked Bobbi if she wanted “to go on an adventure” and they wed one week later, on September 27, 1969. They went on to have 2 children, Sean David, and James Aaron. They had 54 years of loving marriage and many adventures.
John graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science in 1973. After graduating Tech, John and Bobbi then decided to move to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They enjoyed 51 years in Baton Rouge together as residents. John had a long career as a computer programmer in the offshore industry. He worked at Pyburn & Odom, KC Offshore and finally retired from JD Silvetti Marine Services in 2013.
John and his family attended Francis Asbury UMC of Baton Rouge for many years, where he cultivated his faith and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was an active member of the United Methodist Men’s group, a Sunday school teacher, and Chair of the Board of Trustees for many years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend Theron Thomas McKisson and his wife Ethel Mae Beight McKisson; his brothers Theron Thomas McKisson, Jr., James McKisson, and Orval Ray McKisson; and sisters Ruth Idella McKisson Smith, Geneva Joann McKisson Peters, and Audrey May McKisson Daniel. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Ann McKisson; son Sean David McKisson and his wife, Anne; son, “Jim” James Aaron McKisson; his grandchildren Samantha Louise McKisson, Rebecca Anne McKisson, and Gabriel Ray McKisson; and sister Mary Edith McKisson.
