John Elmore "Cowboy" McWaters, 64, passed away on August 14, 2025, in
Burley, Idaho. Born on July 2, 1961, in Nampa, Idaho, John lived a life defined by grit, passion, and an unwavering love for the open range.
John began his working years as a tradesman skilled in many crafts. His hands knew the weight of tools and the satisfaction of building and fixing. But it was when he discovered his deep connection with horses that his true calling emerged. He became a dedicated horse trainer and found his place among the stockyards of southern Idaho. He spent years working at the Twin Falls stockyards before settling in Burley, where he joined Burley Livestock. There, he continued to work with livestock and horses-his lifelong companions-until his final days.
Known affectionately as "Cowboy," John embodied the spirit of the West. He was one of the best cowboys around-not just in skill but in heart. He lived a hard life by choice and embraced every moment of it with authenticity and pride. Whether riding horseback or tinkering in his shop, John poured himself into everything he did.
His passions extended far beyond work. He loved horseback riding and spending time with his beloved dog Whiskey Joe. He had a knack for building motors and welding fabrication, often found tinkering away in his shop on new projects. The outdoors called to him-he enjoyed fishing, kayaking, shooting, camping with family, and relaxing with friends on his houseboat.
John's legacy lives on through his children: Tyrell McWaters, Richard McWaters, Autumn Widgren, Cody McWaters, and Colton Yager; his grandchildren: Sierra Prince, Kaden Cordova, Madyson McWaters, AshLynn McWaters, Ayrianna Strong, Jasmine Thompson Salisbury, Chelton Thompson Shuffield, Justin Thompson, Jessica Widgren, Jonnie McWaters, Samie Lazenby, and Kyler Seller; and two great-grandchildren who carry forward his spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clifford Earl and Lois Vale McWaters; and his brother Robert Earl "Toby" McWaters. He is also remembered by his sister Patti Cutis.
John's dogs were among the most important parts of his life-loyal companions who shared countless trails and quiet moments with him. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Cowboy's Prayer
Our Heavenly Father, we pause at this time, mindful of the many blessings you have bestowed upon us.
We ask. Lord, that you will be with us in the arena of life.
We don't even ask for all daylight runs.
We do ask Lord, that you will help us live our lives here on earth as cowboys, in such a manner, that when we make that last inevitable ride, to the country up there, where the grass grows lush, green, and stirrup high, and the water runs cool, clear, and deep, that you'll take us by the hand and say...
"Welcome to Heaven cowboy, your entry fees are paid."
May the memory of Cowboy ride strong in the hearts of those who loved him.
