John Richter Mitchell

John Richter Mitchell, age 81, a resident of Royal Oak, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Born on September 6, 1944, in Cullman, Alabama, John was the son of Amzie ("Mitch") and Ellen Mitchell. During his childhood, he moved with his family to the Detroit area and later graduated from Mumford High School. He went on to earn his degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University in 1967, beginning a career as a hospital pharmacist at Bi-County Hospital in Warren, where he served faithfully for more than forty years. On July 1, 1967, John married the love of his life, Betty, with whom he shared 58 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. A devoted member of Emmanuel Bethel Church in Royal Oak, John served as Church Treasurer for 20 years. John will be remembered as the beloved husband of Betty; loving father of Kaylynn Mitchell and Michelle (Kevin) Morse; and proud grandfather of Gavin Richter Morse. He was the dear brother of the late Virginia Robinson; brother-in-law of Mary Ann Trojan; and uncle and great-uncle to many nieces and nephews, including Sara (Dave) Veldman, Amanda (John) Sager, and Rebecca (Dave) Heldreth; and great-uncle of Nora Veldman, Ziva and Dasha Sager, and Maddie and Zoey Heldreth. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 3, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors, 705 W. Eleven Mile Rd. (four blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak, MI 48067. John's funeral service will take place on Saturday, October 4, at 11:00 a.m. (visitation at 10:30 a.m.) at Emmanuel Bethel Church, 4000 Normandy Rd., Royal Oak, MI 48073. The family kindly requests no flowers.
