It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John R. Montiel, beloved husband, father, who departed from this world on December 30, 2025, at the age of 81.
John was born on March 8, 1944, in Lytle, Texas to Jose and Emalinda (Reyes) Montiel. He devoted his life to his passion for welding and proudly owned and operated John Montiel and Sons Welding until his retirement.
John's life was a testament to hard work and dedication, and he left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of working alongside him. Yet, beyond his professional life, John was a family man at heart. He found immense joy in cookouts and family gatherings, where laughter and love flourished. An avid fisherman, he cherished the time spent outdoors, creating lasting memories with family and friends.
John is survived by his loving wife, Olga Montiel; his children, Roseanne Garcia of Houston, TX, Rosalynda Castillo of Portales, NM, Jonny Montiel of Portales, NM, Rosemary Romero of Corpus Christi, TX, Robert Montiel of Portales, NM; his brothers, Ben Montiel of Heart, TX, Carnation Montiel of Portales NM, Domingo Montiel of Dimmit, TX, Jesse Montiel of Muleshoe, TX, Mike Montiel of Clovis, NM; his sisters, Hermelinda Montiel of Portales, NM, and Gloria Furgeson of McAllen, TX. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. John's love for his family was boundless, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Preceding John in death are his parents, Jose R and Hermelinda R Montiel; his brothers, Gabriel Montiel, Joe Montiel, Paul Montiel, Julian Montiel, and two infant brothers, Ignacio and baby boy Montiel; one sister SanJuanita Montiel.
A public viewing will take place at Steed-Todd Funeral Home on January 5, 2026, beginning at 8:30 AM, and again on January 6, 2026, beginning at 8:30 AM. Friends and family are invited to join together for a funeral service on January 7, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the same location to honor and celebrate the life of John R. Montiel.
In this time of sorrow, we embrace the memories of a remarkable man whose spirit will be remembered and whose love will forever resonate in our hearts.
