John Nanny Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 14, 2025.
John Thomas Nanny, of Barnhart, Texas, passed away August 12, 2025.

John was born in Kerrville, Texas on May 3, 1951, to Joe and Yetta (Masters) Nanny.

He attended schools in Mt. Vernon, Arkansas, Barnhart, Mertzon, and graduated in 1969 from Kerrville Tivy. After high school, he continued his education, graduating from Southwest Texas Junior College in 1971, and Sul Ross State University in 1973 with a BS in Range/Animal Science.

John spent his entire childhood on a ranch and followed that career path for most of his life. He worked on the Shannon Ranch, Dub White Ranch, Bill Scott Ranch, Gage Holland Ranch, and ended his ranching career at the JC Crosby Estate. In addition to his full-time ranch duties, John broke horses, trapped, graded wool, and preg-checked cows for extra income.

John married BJ in January of 1984. Each brought a son from a previous marriage into this union, but they had a daughter of their own in April of 1986.

In January 1997, John was sworn in as the newly elected Irion County Commissioner of Pct 3. Beyond his family, this was his most prized achievement. He then went on to serve as the President of both the West Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association, as well as the Far West Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association. John made many life-long friends in his tenure with these associations, and the Texas Association of Counties. His presence, guidance, and humor will be missed across the State.

John was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Charles Nanny and Roscoe Nanny.

He is survived by his wife BJ; children Shawn Nanny and wife Angela of Knickerbocker, Randall Edwards and wife Valerie of Andrews, daughter Jonna Jean Weatherby and husband John Olen of Big Lake; brother Henry Nanny and wife Joan of Kerrville; grandchildren Quirt Edwards of Andrews, Charlotte and Clay Monroe of San Antonio, Jake Nanny of Christoval, Jenna Webster and husband Nolan of Arlington, Kimbree, Haislee, Laramee Weatherby of Big Lake, and Levi and Violet Monroe of San Antonio.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00, Saturday August 16, at the Mertzon Community Center.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Barnhart VFD, Irion County 4-H, Hospice of San Angelo, or a favorite charity.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude for all the prayers, phone calls, and texts to help us through this time of sorrow.
