RENSSELAER - John A. "Jack" Nelson, age 88, passed away at St. Peter's Hospice on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the son of the late Archibald and Martha (Maciariello) Nelson. Jack was a graduate of Mechanicville High School and went on to attend H.V.C.C. He later joined the Marine Corps but also served in the U.S. Navy reserves and the Army New York Guard infantry as a second lieutenant. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for the State of New York Office of General Services Design and Construction group as an engineer until his retirement in 1990. He was also the former Schodack town supervisor for two years.
Jack held lifetime memberships with the American Legion Post 91 and the Marine Corps. Association. He also was a fourth degree in the Knights of Columbus. Jack was an avid golfer and bowler. He enjoyed a good Giants game and was a N.Y. Yankees fan. Above all, Jack loved and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
Jack leaves behind his beloved wife, Suzanne (Snyder); his children, Jack (Alonna) Nelson, Tom (Donna) Nelson, Bob Nelson, and Carl (Amy) Nelson; and his daughter-in-law, Susan. He also leaves his adored grandchildren, Melissa (Mark) Skahill, Abby Luciano, Cooper (Heather) Nelson, Connor Nelson, Amy (Anthony) Cremo, Dan (Geena) Nelson, Steven (Liz) Nelson, Sean Nelson, Andrew Nelson, Anthony Nelson, and John Nelson and 12 great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Jack was predeceased by his son, Gary Nelson; and his sister, Patricia St. John.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and special thanks to the staff at St. Peter's Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday, August 7, from 4-7 p.m. at the W.J. Lyons, Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave., Rensselaer. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 8, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
