John F. Nickey, age 98 of Grand Haven, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Trinity Health Hospital, Muskegon. He was born on September 20, 1923, in Gaston, Indiana.
John was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served our country in Italy and North Africa. John married Patricia Aden on July 7, 1973, in Quincy, Illinois, and they lived in Grand Haven throughout their 49 years of marriage. John was a member of Trinity Reformed Church, the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28, and the Quincy Barbershop Chorus. He retired from Gardner Denver and Cooper Tools Division, and in their retirement years, Pat and John went on to own Frame 'N' Gallery in Grand Rapids. John enjoyed woodworking, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. The family was together most holidays which included Easter egg hunts, turkey dinners, special ornaments and bingo scratch-offs at Christmas.
John is survived by his wife, Pat; their children: Paula Smith of Norton Shores, Renee (Lyle) Rycenga of Grand Haven and Jeff Hunsaker (Diane Moeller) of Grand Rapids; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; his sister, Margaret Swanson of Grand Haven; sister-in-law, Helen Aden of Moline, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Nickey; parents-in-law, Emma and Arthur Aden; son-in-law, Doug Smith; brother, Robert Nickey; sister, Martha (Bill) Fisher; nephew, Seth Nickey; and brothers-in-law, Roy Swanson and Dr. Marvilee Aden.
The Funeral Service for John will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 4, 2022, at Trinity Reformed Church (Ferry Street, Grand Haven) with the Rev. Randy Bremmer officiating. Full Military Honors to be performed by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Interment will be at Golden Memorial Gardens in Golden, Illinois. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Trinity Reformed Church.
