John Nicolio Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lawrence A Gabriel Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. - Main Office on Jan. 5, 2026.

John A. Nicolio, 97, passed away peacefully on January 2nd. He was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, caring brother, and loyal friend to many.

Jack was the beloved son of Augustine and Rose Nicolio, both of whom preceded him in death. From an early age, his faith played a central role in his life. His mother, Rose, faithfully prayed to St. Ann and brought him to St. Ann’s Monastery and Shrine Basilica as a young boy, planting deep spiritual roots that would guide him throughout his life. Jack carried these beliefs forward, sharing his devotion with his family and passing along the importance of faith, prayer, and tradition. St. Ann remained especially important to him and his family over the years.

Throughout his long and meaningful life, Jack was known for his broad smile, quick-witted sense of humor, contagious laughter, kindness, steady presence, and deep devotion to his family. One of his great joys was the game of golf, which he continued to enjoy well into his 80s.

Jack proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. His commitment to service extended beyond his military years. He was a 70-year member of the American Legion, Post 610, and a 63-year member and the last surviving charter member of the Mayfield Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Angela Tapyrik, Carl Savo, Josephine Johnson, Dominick Nicolio, Anthony Nicolio, and Parma Baggetta, and by his beloved son, Curtis Nicolio.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Nicolio; his children, Johna Sedorovitz and her husband Ed, Glen Nicolio, and Leann Nicolio; his granddaughters, Tiffani Sedorivitz and her husband Noah Ungar of Colorado, and Morgan Sedorovitz and her partner Christian Holowchak of Pittsburgh; his sister, Irene Romeo of Carbondale; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to his special, kind, and patient caregiver, Kyra Aseline, whose compassionate care and loving presence meant so much and who truly became part of their family.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday, January 7th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 74 North Main Street, Carbondale, PA 18407.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 8th, at 10:00 a.m. in Christ the King Parish at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 624 Madison Avenue, Jermyn, PA 18433. Entombment will follow in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

Jack’s legacy lives on through the family he loved so deeply, the faith he passed down through generations, and the service he gave so selflessly to his country and community. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ann’s Monastery and Shrine Basilica, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
