John O'Grady Obituary

O'Grady, John "Butch"
TROY - John "Butch" "Jack" "Coach" O'Grady, 82, of Troy, peacefully entered into eternal life on Thursday, November 13, 2025, just one day after celebrating his 59th wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Elaine M. Carpenter O'Grady, who he adored since they were in sixth grade.
Born in Troy, he was the son of the late James and Frances McGivern O'Grady and was a graduate of St. Patrick's School and LaSalle Institute, Class of 1961, both in Troy. In 1963, Butch began his service in the U.S. Army, was awarded the Sharpshooter Rifle, Sharpshooter Carbine, Expert Carbine and Good Conduct Medals and Honorable Discharge in 1969.
Jack retired from a lengthy career at General Electric Silicones, in Waterford, where he was a Plant Leader.
Butch was a Life-Member of the Veterans Of Lansingburgh, a member of the Friends of 112th Street, the All-Troy Athletic Club "ATAC" and the BPOE #141 Troy Lodge of Elks, served as the Catholic Central High School Girls Softball Coach for 33 years, was a member of the CCHS Athletic Hall of Fame, served as a Soccer Official for 27 years refereeing at all levels, was an avid golfer, organizing numerous tournaments for many years and enjoyed the camaraderie of family and friends. He cherished each Memorial Day with his Canadian friends.
Butch is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Elaine; and their two children, Deborah (Darin) Porter and Kevin (Annmarie) O'Grady; four grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Papa," Shea and Payton Porter, Sean and Erin O'Grady; his siblings, Francis G. "Frank" (late, Joan) O'Grady and Patricia O'Grady; also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families. He was predeceased by siblings, Edward, James and Stanley O'Grady, Betty Ann Vaughan, Margaret McCarthy, Mary Alice Doyle and RoseMarie Kotansky.
Relatives and friends are invited to Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 N. Lake Ave., Troy, N.Y. 12180, on Thursday, November 20, 2025, for Calling Hours from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and to the Funeral Mass of Catholic Burial, at 10:30 a.m. which will be followed by interment with full military honors at 12:30 p.m., at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, in Schuylerville.
Due to floral restrictions at the cemetery, the O'Grady family would ask that any contributions be made to the All-Troy Athletic Club Kids Christmas Fund, 538 Second Ave., Troy, N.Y. 12182 or to the Veterans of Lansingburgh, 777 First Ave., Troy, N.Y. 12182, in memory of Butch O'Grady.
