John Hall Ogden
September 4, 1941 – February 2, 2026
John Hall Ogden, 84, passed away on February 2, 2026, in
Naples, Florida, surrounded by the love of his wife and children.
Family and Legacy
John is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Catherine "Katie" (Harris) Ogden; his three children, Laura Ogden Devens (Gordon), Susan Ogden DuRoss (Andrew), and John William Ogden; and his brother, Jim Ogden (JoAnn), and sister, Jill Ogden. He was a loving grandfather to five grandchildren-Jake and Allison DuRoss, Drew and Tatiana Devens, and Flynn Ogden-with whom he was blessed to spend meaningful time in the weeks preceding his passing.
Early Life and Education
John was born on September 4, 1941, in
Grosse Pointe, Michigan, to Chester Frank and Jane Catherine (LaChapelle) Ogden. After graduating from Grosse Pointe High School in 1959, he attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, followed by a Master's Degree in Business Administration. A proud member of the Chi Psi fraternity, he forged friendships that lasted a lifetime, with many memories shared over a hard-fought Michigan football game.
It was also at Michigan where John had a serendipitous encounter with Katie, a student in the School of Education. They were married on August 15, 1964, in Bay City, Michigan, beginning a lifelong partnership.
Professional Career
John dedicated thirty years to Ford Motor Company, serving in various senior domestic and international executive roles. His career was highlighted by his time abroad as President of Ford of Mexico (1986–89) and President of Ford of Australia (1992–95). John thrived in the autonomy of these roles where success and failure were directly tied to his decisions and actions. In these roles, he favorably managed negotiations with heads of state and cabinet members. Beyond the professional success, these international assignments provided his family with the "experiences of their lifetimes," exposing them to the common humanity of diverse cultures. A notable highlight of his time in Melbourne was the honor of presenting trophies to the champions of the Australian Open tennis tournament.
A Life Well Lived
In retirement, John and Katie enjoyed the best of both worlds as "snowbirds," spending summers amidst the natural beauty of Harbor Springs, Michigan, and winters on the warm beaches of Naples. Ever the avid golfer, John became a mainstay in the golfing communities of both Birchwood Farms Golf and Country Club in Michigan and Club Pelican Bay in Florida.
John was led by what he knew to be right, and he acted this out in his daily life. He was a happy and friendly person, making authentic connections with all people who might cross his path. His infectious laugh was well known by all friends and family and could light up a room.
Above all, John was a dedicated family man. Spending time with his children and grandchildren was the most important thing to him and filled him with delight. Many an idyllic day was spent with his grandkids swimming, biking, or golfing and ending the day with a "Family Special," a grilled burger and Michigan sweet corn on the back deck, as the sun set over Lake Michigan.
