John was a dear classmate during our years together at Pomona College. The twenty-year-old was no different from the man many of you knew. Thoughtful, kind, and immoveable in what he saw as right. My brother, my friend.

The earth is void of a hero and heaven has gained a servant. I was told of Mr. Payton's death by a friend who gave me the charge to continue the fight for equality. His legacy will continue to transform the lives of many. MY prayers are with Mrs. McDougall and family. Please know that there is someone(Millie Coby) in Milwaukee, WI praying for you daily.

Mr. Payton was a phenomenal legal scholar and a very approachable stalwart advocate, especially for the voiceless and the underserved. His legal contributions to our city and the country are extraordinary and can only be surpassed only by his unyielding willingness to routinely respond to the cries of help from our grassroots communities. God bless Mr. Payton and the Payton family.

To the Payton family:
My deepest condolences to you during this time of pain. He truly believed in justice and tried his best to help others. He will certainly be missed. Thinking about all he accomplished shows what wonderful qualities we have and wanting better conditions. Notice at Isaiah 65:21-23, shows that in Gods New World, we will have true peace and security and will not toil for anything.

Mr. Payton is well respected and worked very hard. His good works will not be forgotten. There is a promise in the book of Psalms which we all look forward to. It reads: "And my people must dwell in a peaceful abiding place and in residences of full confidence and undisturbed resting-places." May you be comforted during this time of loss. I sincerely offer my condolence. John's death has no doubt cast a shadow over you as you go about your daily life because death bring us face-to-face with the fact that he is gone too soon. His presence will be dearly missed. So despite the pain of grief, let it be your resolve to continue to work your way through pain and grief. The rich life that he led has left many memories. Times like this make us sad. But, there is "a time to weep." (Ecclesiates 3:4) Yet you can have the hope seeing your love one. Jesus said "Do not let your be troubled". (John 14:27) Sometimes we may feel paralyzed by a tragedy such as this. Remember: God help you to endure any and every promblem they may face. He will give the "powere beyond what is normal" to go from one day to the next. (2Corinthians 4:7)
