John Peavy Obituary
U.S. Veteran
John Robert Peavy, 79, went home to praise our Father, reunited with loved ones who went on before him, especially his parents Horace C. Peavy and Eunice Boykin Peavy, and brother H. Terrell "Terry" Peavy. Robert died November 4, 2025, in Savannah, Georgia.
Robert was born October 15, 1946, in Savannah, and baptized at Port Wentworth Methodist Church. He attended Port Wentworth Elementary School and graduated from Robert W. Groves High School in 1964. He attended Armstrong College and the University of Georgia, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1968. He was commissioned as an officer in the US Navy from the Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, then he served at the Naval Ordnance Systems Command near Bloomington, Indiana. After his service, he returned to Savannah and spent a career with the US Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District. While employed by the Corps of Engineers, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Armstrong State College and a Masters in Water Resources Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also had extended assignments in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Alexandria, Virginia. He was a licensed Engineer.
After retirement, he pursued his interests in family history and genealogy, not only for his own family, but for others in Effingham and Screven counties and elsewhere. He conducted his research with scholarship, thoroughness, and discipline. He was a member of the Historical Effingham Society and the Georgia Salzburger Society and participated in many activities and events each year, and authored material for journals, newsletters, and programs. He served as an Assistant Curator at the Living History Museum at Ebenezer. He particularly enjoyed leading tours at the museum. He was a musician and he played French horn in high school band and at college. He was a bass-baritone and loved to sing every day.
Robert was a lifelong member of Port Wentworth Methodist Church where his parents and grandparents had been involved for nearly a century. For the past several years, he worshipped faithfully at St. John's Lutheran Church and Jerusalem Lutheran Church where he served as choir member and cantor, often at both churches on the same Sunday. He enjoyed visiting other area churches and participating in interfaith camp meetings and revivals.
Robert was dedicated to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family, his home, and his country. He lovingly cared for his mother and father in his home during the last years of their lives. He enjoyed the fellowship of his church communities through Bible Study, Theology on Tap, choir, Sunday school classes, shared meals, and church events and celebrations, where he formed deep friendships. He lived the gospel through his service and faithful ministry to others, particularly the sick, lonely, and dying. He dedicated his gifts of voice, heart, mind, and service to the glory of God. Robert's perspective was guided by scripture. His favorite book of the Bible was Philippians and a verse that encapsulated his approach in serving is found in chapter 4 verse 4: "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice."
Robert was preceded to Glory by his parents, Horace and Eunice, and his brother Terry.
Left to honor his memory are his brother Richard "Rick" Peavy and Patrick Crane of Bellingham, Washington, sister-in-law Barbara Peavy, nephew Clay Peavy and Jennifer, niece Carla McCutchen and Jack, great-niece Peyton McCutchen, great-nephew Jackson McCutchen, and great-niece Chloe Peavy, all of Rincon, Georgia, and his dear canine companion, Sophie. Neighbors Steve and Cheryl Howell were a blessing to him, helping him in numerous ways over years. His many friends from his church communities and historical societies returned his service to others with their kindness, generosity, comfort, and support through meals, transportation to medical appointments, and companionship.
Robert's family expresses their deepest appreciation for the love, compassion, care, and support from his many friends, neighbors, and staff at Hospice Savannah for their beloved brother and uncle. Even as our hearts grieve and miss him, our souls rejoice that he lives in blessed eternity.
The family is planning a memorial service for Robert to be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations may be given to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
Give rest, O Christ, to your servant, Robert, with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.
Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
