Mr. Zenbei Furuya

I was shocked and saddened by the news of John's passing. On his birthday last year in 2024, John told me that I was the oldest friend of his on that day. I first met john in Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan on August 13, 1955, that is 70 years ago. John was a naval attache of the American Embassy in Tokyo, and I was a graduate student of Waseda University in Tokyo. Since then, we had many cherished memories. I pray John's peaceful resting now.

Always greeted you with a smile, humor and caring words. A wonderful man whose works and deeds are remembered and whose loss fills those who knew him with sadness for his passing but with fondness for a life filled with good works.

I am deeply grateful to John Curtis Perry, the scholar, the mentor, the teacher, the orator, the legend. His teaching and mentorship truly changed the course of my life and career and defined my post-Fletcher evolution. In 2002, I was incredibly fortunate to be the first recipient of the John Curtis Perry Scholarship. We mourn together, while celebrating the immortal legacy of an extraordinary Grand Master of our Fletcher clan.

Professor Perry shaped lives in ways monumental and sublime. My career in academe, non-profit organizations and public service centered on North Pacific cooperation--because of John Curtis Perry. In funding travels for doctoral research and graduate student meetings among ourselves and North Pacific partners, Professor Perry opened doors to lives of sharing and scholarship. In love, in pith, thank you, Professor Perry, for everything.
