JOHN PESCHEL Obituary

PESCHEL--John Lawrence. 1935-2022, dear friend and colleague, survived by sister, Mary Peschel Jakes and her husband, Andy Jakes, and nephews David and Phil and their families. Professor Emeritus and Associate Dean at NYU School of Law 1978-96 and resident of NYC since the 1970s. An aspect of John's professional expertise remains reflected in the Federal Taxation of Trusts, Grantors & Beneficiaries publication, a transactional analysis of trusts under federal estate, gift, income and generation-skipping transfer taxes John co- authored with Professor Edward Spurgeon of the University of Georgia Law School. John was admired for his clarity of thought, generosity and loyalty to his friends. His omnipresent desire to elicit understanding - if not agreement - was always pursued with a pinch of humor. A great aficionado of the performing arts, classical music in particular, John relished the multiplicity of quality offerings his life in NYC and travels afforded - albeit often, perhaps, as also in life, from a seat on the side on the aisle. His keen affinity with Germany was reflected in multiple visits there over several decades - to friends in Berlin and Frankfurt, in particular. A supporter of a wide variety of charitable causes, many of which aiding the less-fortunate in mission, he also supported local arts and environmental organizations. Memorial/life celebration details to be advised. Grief is the price of love - and treasured memories persist.

Sending condolences to John's family from my father, John (Jack) Taggart. He is suffering from dementia, therefore cannot send his personal condolences. My father greatly enjoyed his friendship with John which stretched back many decades. He spoke of John often and their many lunches and dinners out. I believe they enjoyed throwing a few back and regaling the good old days. John's friendship was very helpful to my father when he became a widow, and I believe they just lost touch in the last year as my father got sicker. Whenever I asked him about John, my dad would always say, "He's gone off to Germany, I will see him when he returns." We are sorry for your loss, and sorry that my father has lost a good friend.
