John and I became friends playing Church League basketball in St. Joseph on the Lutheran team and we were classmates at SJHS as well. More recently we reconnected through numerous emails after I visited Latvia and then read John & Ventis' history of their experience at Insula. He often spoke of the challenging mountains he climbed with his daughter and his love of nature. I remember John as a gentle person with a accurate jump shot.

John, or Johann as i affectionately called him became friends in 1978 while working claims for State Farm Ins. We enjoyed talking about everything, even politics and religion. We never got mad at each other even if we disagreed. Johann entertained me with his exploits and adventures. My wife and I had been to Munich and Berchtesgaden, so we could appreciate his family's time at Insula. Through all the years my wife and I grew to love Johann like a brother.
