John passed away at his home in Charlevoix, Michigan with family present on December 3, 2025. He was born on March 22, 1933, in Bellaire, the son of John and Effie (Mason) Powell.
After working for 41 years, John retired from DME Corporation. For many years John enjoyed photography, traveling, hunting, and fishing. He enjoyed having a donut, sitting on the pontoon boat fishing with his brother Joe, and every now and then, catching a fish. He was a man who lived his Christian faith and gave generously of his time and talents to any one in need.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma (Thorp), his parents, Effie and John Powell, his sister and brother-in-law, Alma and Bill Armstrong, a son-in-law, Joseph LeCureux, and daughter-in-law, Barbara Powell.
He is survived by his 3 children, JoAnne Patrick, (Michael) of Charlevoix, John Powell, (Regina) of Scottsboro, Alabama, and Nancy Melke, (Richard) of Bowling Green, Kentucky. His brother Joe, (Velma) Powell of Charlevoix. He has been blessed with 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 5 great, great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 7, at 4pm, at the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Visitation will take place from 2pm until the time of service. His informal service will include cookies, the treat grandpa Johnny supplied on Tuesday night, family time.
