In memory of

Bob,
We shared many adventures, some subtle and relaxed, some requiring great effort and interpersonal restraint. The locations were many: The Prism, Court Square Tavern, The Gravity Lounge, Cafe Cubano, the American Southwest (including canoeing the Green River), the Pacific Northwest (and all the brew pubs between here and there), and (probably the most meaningful) the 12 years of regular happy hours hosted by Sid and Dennis. I realize that in recent years we had far less contact, but I would still look for you most days when I went to Cafe Cubano. You always had something interesting to show me on that ever-present laptop (stock reports, musicians' websites, your latest online flame). Life really won't be the same without your quirky refinement and perpetual search for meaning. If there is an existence "beyond the veil," I hope you find peace.

We will all miss his quick and quirky wit, his love of literature, music and art, and his kind, true and gentle nature that kept him watering other fields while his were dry.

Bob, we'll miss you... you were a very kind man and I'm sorry I'll never hear one of your stories or enjoy a beer or glass of wine with you again.

Bob was the gentlest of souls. To me, it sums it up to say that he possessed so many qualities that so many of us strive for in life but never quite measure up. He was very special indeed.
I will miss running into him on the downtown mall.

Bob, we will miss you. You were a fixture in our lives in Charlottesville, thirteen years of regular Friday night happy hours. I'll never forget when you spontaneously showed up when I was camping with a friend on Ocracoke Island. You were always there if we needed you. I'm glad we reconnected recently on facebook, and that you were continuing to do all the things you loved. Rest in peace, Bob. With love from Sid, Dennis, and Joschka

Bob in his own words:
I come from a family with deep roots in southside Virginia. Raised on a tobacco farm on the edge of moonshine country I have some old-fashioned values and reserve but an artist's concern and gentleness, and take pride in a battle-toughened hide. I'm personally easy going, romantic and sweet, so I'm told, but have the critic's scowl and crackle. A fan of acoustic music I listen to live shows most nights, though good ballet is the art that moves me most for it gives the clearest sense of the sublime. When I travel I look for good brew pubs to sample what I would never be able to taste in a bottle. I listen well and have great patience. Am told that I have a mind, heart, and spirit much younger than my years. . . . . . . . I could say that I'm known for fixing 'most anything; my mind (that's for others to describe); my doggedness (woof! woof!); my spirit, humor and smile. . . . I'm drawn to the ocean but am a particular fan of the Southwest -- I think the land there slowly comes to affect one deeply. -- I could summarize my religion as: "Alienos rigas agros tuis sitientibus. -- You water others' fields while yours are dry."
He was a great friend.
