John Andrew Rade, age 90, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully on Palm Sunday, 2025. Born January 17, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio, he lived a life define by faith, generosity, and service.
John graduated from St. Ignatius High School and John Carroll University, working part-time jobs to support his education. He later established the John Rade Scholarship Fund and donated Rade Dining Hall, a wonderfully modern dining facility at St. Ignatius. A lifelong giver, John supported St. Michael the Archangel Church, funded Thanksgiving meals for families in need for over four decades, and championed local children's services, including The Florida Center for Early Childhood and Suncoast Charities for Children.
An officer in the U.S. Army, John served primarily in Italy before launching a global career that took him to Switzerland, England, Brussels, and Paris. Fluent in several languages, he earned admiration for his intellect, leadership and kindness. He was also an avid sailor and competitor in Fastnet Races with the Royal Ocean Racing Club in the 1960s and 70s.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hayes Rade; sons J. Andrew Rade (Joele) and J. Scott Rade (Kathryn); grandchildren Danielle R. Mahoney (Matthew), Kaitlyn E. Rade, and Matthew J. Rade, sister Judy Rosemark; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julianna and J. Henry Rade, and brother James Uran Rade.
A service will be held on Friday, May 30th, at 11:00am, in St. Micheal the Archangel Church, 5394 Midnight Pass Road, Siesta Key, FL 34242.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Michael the Archangel Ministry Center, 5394 Midnight Pass Road, Siesta Key, FL 34242: or the John A. Rade Scholarship Fund at St. Ignatius High School, 1911 West 30th Street, Cleveland, OH 44113.
