John Randall Rathman

John handed off a customer to me at an on-site meeting at the customer´s plant. It was very hot in the plant, so John and I would pause next to an open external door to get a little cooler air. Next to that door, there was a metal bracket with a metal arm that was just low enough that I could hit my head on it, and at his height he would have easily hit it. I was very careful when we were standing by that outer door. So, I only hit my head twice, which he found comical as I asked him how he avoided it. He had developed an innate sense due to his height, he just looked at me and as was John´s way he was able to quietly communicate his answer without a word.

I knew a lot of calm, cool people while in the military when things became hectic. John is top tier calm and cool in my travels.

I appreciate John´s time I had with him, and will carry a part of him forward as we all will.

I was heartbroken to hear about the passing of John. He was one of the first people who truly took the time to mentor me in my career, and his guidance meant more to me than I can express.
He shared his knowledge generously, encouraged me to ask questions, and helped me grow not only as an engineer but as a person. I carry many lessons from him with me every day in my work.
I feel incredibly lucky to have learned from him. His impact will stay with me for the rest of my career.
