John L. Roncone Jr., 88, passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2025 in Leominster, Massachusetts surrounded by his family. Born on July 18, 1936, in Worcester, Massachusetts, he led a life dedicated to his profession, community and family, having been a fixture in the Leominster and Central Massachusetts legal communities for over 60 years.
John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Catherine (Montuori); his son, Jay Roncone of Los Angeles, CA; his daughter, Cara Reilly and her husband, James Reilly, of Holden MA; his sisters, Donna Roncone and Susan Roncone; his grandchildren, Nicolas Roncone, Olivia Reilly, and Grace Reilly; his niece, Christine Parker and her children Sydney, Madeline and William; and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Deborah Roncone.
John graduated from Fitchburg High School before attending Mount St. Mary's College in Maryland, where he became the first in his family to earn a college degree. He went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the New England School of Law in Boston, followed by a Master of Laws degree from New York Law School. After completing his education, John returned to Leominster, Massachusetts to begin his legal career. He started practicing law on Main Street in Leominster at the firm of Solomon & Roncone, then at Solomon, Roncone & Gazourian and eventually at the Roncone Law Offices, PC, where he worked with his son until retirement in 2022.
Throughout his professional life, John remained deeply committed to public service. He was appointed as a Special Assistant Attorney General by the Honorable Francis X. Bellotti and was actively involved in the Massachusetts Democratic Party for many years, serving both as a state delegate and as Chair of the City of Leominster Democratic Party. He also held leadership roles outside of politics, including as Chairman of the Board of the former FIA Credit Union. More recently, he served for several years as a Commissioner on the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
In addition to his many accomplishments, John was a generous mentor who always made time to listen, offer guidance, and share his experience with countless lawyers throughout his career. John's passion for law and justice shaped a long, distinguished legal career and left a lasting impact on his clients, colleagues, and the legal community. John was known for his sharp wit and keen sense of humor, bringing joy and laughter to all who knew him. An avid enthusiast of vintage automobiles, he also enjoyed playing golf (as a lefty), tennis, and swimming. John owned a stable of thoroughbred horses that raced along the East Coast. He also cherished his time spent in Boston's North End and on Cape Cod, often visiting his favorite spots and restaurants. A lifelong boxing fan and devoted supporter of Boston sports teams, John cheered enthusiastically for his favorites. He looked forward to his annual trips to Siesta Key, Florida and he particularly loved boating "down the river" on Cape Cod with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In honor of John's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Anna's Parish at 199 Lancaster Street, Leominster, MA 01453.

So sorry. John was a wonderful friend that I had known since law school days in the early '60s. He was also a terrific lawyer and it was always a pleasure to be anyway connected with him. God bless. Judge Ed Reynolds
