John Joseph Ruby, Sr., a beloved man known for his kindness and open-mindedness, passed away on July 10, 2025, at IU West Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on August 5, 1933, in Indianapolis, John lived a full life dedicated to family, friends, and his passions.
John enjoyed a dedicated career at Link Belt, where he worked for over 30 years. He was a remarkable example of hard work and commitment, traits that endeared him to colleagues and friends alike.
A life-long sports enthusiast, John's heart was captured by the Indiana Hoosiers, whom he cherished above all else. He found joy in golfing and was an avid follower of the Indianapolis Colts and Pacers as well. Beyond sports, John had a great affection for reading, particularly thrillers, which he consumed with enthusiasm. He also relished traveling with Top Notch Tours, exploring new places and creating cherished memories.
Those who knew John appreciated his gentle nature and sense of humor. He possessed an endearing quirk when it came to technology; though he had a cell phone, it often remained uncharged and seldom accompanied him. Texting was an enigmatic puzzle for him, and any replies he did manage to send were usually amusingly cryptic.
John is survived by his step-children: Tamyra K. Pettygrove (Bert), Mark W. Hansen (Marilyn), and James E. Hansen (Sherrie), along with many grandchildren and other relatives who will remember him fondly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Sylvia Ruby; his brother, Russell Ruby; his sister-in-law, Martha Ruby; his wife, Shirley Johnson Ruby; and his son, John Joseph Ruby, Jr.
He leaves a legacy of warmth, acceptance, and a love for sports that will be remembered by all who knew him. John lived a life full of passion and dedication, and he will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind.
