Russ, John L., 83, Mount Union, passed away Saturday January 18, 2025, at UPMC Altoona. Born June 1, 1941, Altoona, son of the late Edward and Aileen Bell (Bridenstien) Russ. Survived by his loving wife, Patricia J. (Gries) Russ; children, Karri Moser and husband, Sean; Tamara Henney and husband, Michael; and daughters Bobbi Johnson and Wendi Brunner from his previous marriage; 4 grandchildren, Alyssa, Jacob, Madeline, and Jonathan. Preceded in death by siblings, Edward Russ, Nancy Poorman, James Russ, George Russ, and Susie Russ. John attended Altoona High School. After school he joined the United States Army and honorably served his country in Vietnam where he received a Bronze Star. John continued his service with the United States Army for over 22 years serving with the Old Guard in Arlington and as a drill instructor. Following retirement from the Army he was employed as a corrections officer at SCI Huntingdon. John enjoyed watching football and racing. He loved following the Little League World Series. Most of all John loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren, relaxing on his back porch. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday January 22, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again on Thursday January 23, 2025, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., at the funeral home, Joseph Barrett, officiant. Interment to be in Newton Hamilton Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements have been entrusted to Heath-Anderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 61 E.
