I remember John for his unwavering devotion to his family, his career, his friends, and anyone he came in contact with. His keen insight and wit enabled him to succeed in all those areas. I also remember his as my
"adopted son" which he became when he was a student in cadet class. I still miss being able to pick up the phone and visit with him.

My deepest condolences to John Eric's family. I had the honor of leading the mounted police unit at the strawberry fest under John Eric's leadership for many years and had the pleasure of working side by side with him at many festivals and concerts on horseback patrol.
John Eric was Texas. John Eric was a Cowboy. John Eric was a lawman and I doubt we will ever see the likes of someone like him again. Rest in peace Ole Amigo.

John Eric Rutherford was a great man.
I first got to know him when I worked for the Pleasanton Express. I would meet with him weekly to find out the crime stories of the week. Later when I worked with the Atascosa County SO I had a chance to talk with him more. He was an old school type man who was born and raised the right way. He had a great sense of humor and was great to be around. he will be missed!

My condolences and prayers for the family of John Eric. He was truly a great lawman as well as Christain man. I met him on the streets of Pleasanton in the late 80's. He never once judged me and treated me with dignity & respect from the start. He was a true gentleman and never let his badge bow his chest out. I last spoke to him at Mi Mexico a few weeks back. He always had time for the people he proudly served and protected. Our community has lost a terrific leader. Again, prayers and hugs to his family.

God has his own reason for taking Chief Rutherford from this world to the next
The Measure of a Man
Not how did he die? But how did he live
Not what did he gain? But what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth of a man. Not of Birth. Not what was his station? But had he a heart? And how did he play his God given part?
Was he ever ready with a word of good cheer, to bring back a smile, to banish a tear. Not what was his church? Nor what was his creed? But had he befriended those really in need? Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say? But how many were sorry when he passed away?

My life was/is much more blessed to have known this wonderful family. Miles and years cant separate the love and admiration of the Rutherfords, the visits to Jourdanton, the Oasis, great food and true fellowship with this wonderful family. with all our love,

With Sympathy and Condolences. May peace be with you and your family. John Eric was such an inspiration to many and his lessons in life will carry on, as well as his true spirit of love for humanity. As a cadet family member of the first Law Enforcement class John taught in Pleasanton, I will forever carry on what he instilled in us, as cadets, "Truth, honesty, intregrety, family values and protection for the people we serve." John Eric will always hold a special place in my heart for what he instilled in the life of others.

To John Eric's Family:
I've known John Eric since he was a little boy in school and at church and drank a few beers with him over the last 40 years and he was one of the best. I never saw him upset or ragging on anyone and his job would have driven me crazy. He was one of the best in law enforcement. I saw him a few weeks ago and he told me he retired and then went right back to working in McMullen County. I told him he couldn't just sit at home. He was a damn good man! God bless him!

My condolences to the family. Prayers for strength. I started my law enforcement career more than 25 years ago and have met and known many law enforcement officers, I have always put John Eric on the top of that list as one of the best. He is also one of the best instructors I've met. He is who talked me into being an instructor. The law enforcement community has lost a good one, but so did the community he served. God Bless you John Eric I will never forget you brother.
