John Sarka Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Canale Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Marquette on Apr. 18, 2025.
John E. (Jack) Sarka, 84, of Marquette, died Sunday, April 13, 2025, at his home in Chocolay Township, under the care of Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.
Jack was born February 8, 1941 in Marquette, a son of John D. and Ann (Laramie) Sarka. He grew up within earshot of Hurley Field in South Marquette, graduated from Graveraet High School in 1958, and was a lifelong area resident.
Following high school he enlisted in the US Navy, serving on the USS Strong (DD-758) as Sonarman Petty Officer 2nd Class until his honorable discharge in May 1962.
Jack was a master electrician, and was employed by Iron Range Cable in 1962 and by CCI beginning in 1965. He served that company at the Empire Mine until his retirement in 1999.
Jack played Legion baseball, fastpitch softball and hockey for Fletcher's Market, Remillard's Bar and Vango's, and enjoyed the camaraderie of his opponents as well as his teammates. He was grateful for his dad, John, and his grandfather Ed Laramie for teaching him to hunt and fish, and his mom, Ann, for teaching him gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Lula (Weiger) Sarka of Marquette, son Daniel M. (Carolyn) Sarka of Minneapolis, MN, grandchildren Elick and Laila, brother Robert, and sister Rosann. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Glenn Sarka.
A Celebration of Jack's Life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 10 am to 1 pm at Canale-Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
