Longview Funeral Home & CemeteryJohn “Jack” Ernest Schell, age 82, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and steadfast love for his family and community.
John was born on June 10, 1943, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was raised at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Throughout his life, he called many places home, including Torrington, Wyoming; Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri, and most recently Lee’s Summit, Missouri. These moves reflected both his professional career and his commitment to wherever God led him.
John graduated from Torrington High School in Wyoming and went on to attend the University of Wyoming in Laramie. He later continued his education at Grace University in Omaha, followed by Graceway Shepherd’s School in Kansas City, where his faith and theological grounding deepened.
Professionally, John enjoyed a successful career as a computer consultant, working with Digital Equipment Corporation and Celeritas Technologies. He was respected for his intelligence, problem-solving abilities, and quiet dedication to excellence.
Above all, John was a man of deep and enduring faith. He was an active member of Graceway Church since 1985, where he served faithfully as a teacher, Bible study leader, member of the Board of Directors, and Finance Committee member. He also led the SwordSmiths small group Bible study and another Bible study, pouring wisdom and encouragement into countless lives. His commitment to studying and sharing God’s Word was a defining part of who he was. He deeply loved God’s word and felt called to remind believers of who they are and what they have in Christ.
John was an artist. Many people don’t know that he found joy in creating art with colored pencils and simple paints, a gift passed down to him from his father. From lighthouses to rural scenes, small boats and sailing vessels, his art conveyed peace and serenity. He also enjoyed aircraft, attending as many local airshows as possible, even having an entire Christmas tree that featured airplane ornaments.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sharon (Isaac) Schell, who passed on March 24, 2024. They were married on April 10, 1976, sharing many years of love, partnership, and faith together. He was also preceded in death by his parents, John E. Schell and Katherine (Fernandes) Schell, and his brother, David Schell.
He is survived by his loving children, Jeremy Schell (Stacey) and Jennifer Schell; and his dearly loved grandchildren, Adeline, Jackson, and Gideon Schell, who brought him great joy and pride. He is also survived by Eric, Joel, and Kara Schell.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m. at Graceway Church, officiated by Pastor Jeff Adams. Hymns chosen to honor John’s life include “Come to Jesus,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators(wycliffe.org), a cause close to John’s heart and reflective of his passion for sharing Scripture. John will be remembered for his unwavering faith, gentle wisdom, and the profound impact he made through a life devoted to God, family, and service.
