John Sforza loved his work as a special education teacher. It wasn't work for him as it provided a wonderful sense of belonging, accomplishment and an ability to make the lives of his countless number of students better in both simple and great ways. "To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - that is to have succeeded" wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson and it accurately summarizes John's rewarding career as a teacher. John E. Sforza was born in Boston's North End, a son of the late Enrico and Edith (Bergonzi) Sforza and was raised in Somerville. He was a graduate of Somerville High School with the class of 1967. He then earned his Bachelor's degree from Boston State College and Master's degree from Boston College. He died Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln after an illness. He was 72. He married Marianne Hall on August 26, 1972 in Saint Luke's Church in Belmont and had been a resident of Waltham since 1978. Both he and Marianne were both educators and were fortunate to enjoy their summers and other great times at their home in West Yarmouth with their daughters, grandchildren, family and friends. His teaching career began at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown where he worked over three years. And then for over thirty-two years he was a special education teacher at Maynard High School before retiring in 2009. Retirement afforded them time to travel extensively which they enjoyed. They travelled two times across the country with the destination being Portland, Oregon where their daughter and family live. John loved all things orange and perhaps with no irony he died when the color is most vibrant here in New England. He was an avid New England sports enthusiast and member of the Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Church and former member of the Medford Knights of Columbus. In addition to his wife of 49 years, he leaves his daughters, Amanda R. Smutok (Michael) of Whitinsville and Laura T. Hunker (Philip) of Portland, Oregon; his grandchildren, Annabel and Lillian 'Lily' Smutok and Michael and Henry Hunker; his brother-in-law, James Hall (Debra) of San Diego, California; his nieces, Jamie Hassell Hall, Julie White and Sara Huddleston, all of California. John was also the brother of the late Robert Sforza. Family and friends will honor and remember John's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, October 28th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again Friday morning at 9 a.m. before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial is private. Memorials in his name may be made to the American Kidney Fund, www.KidneyFund.org

Truly sorry to learn of John's passing. Know he is with his Heavenly Farther safe. Knowing John who always has a joke and his infectious smile is having a great time telling all his tales. Always so interesting too.

I worked in Special Education Administration office. John was a great Special Education teacher and had big heart for his students, as much as they loved him too.
We lost our Special Ed Director who passed away. John just stepped in and handled administration job, as well as,teaching every day till found a replacement. Tells alot about man John was.

My sympathies to Mariann, and his family. Holding you all in my prayers for grace, mercy and comfort during this difficult time of your great loss.

John,rest in eternal peace.

One of the best at Maynard High. He made life better for so many kids. Especially those that had no one to care for them. Truly a great man.

We are so sad to hear of Johns passing. We will cherish our memories of funny chats with him on Baker Road. And we will miss those eye-rolling moments when John would ask Bud, the cranberry grower, do you know how many cranberries there are in a bottle of cranberry juice? Here's to you, John, as we toast with some of that very juice! Love, Bud & Linda

To Marianne, Amanda, Laura and the rest of John's family,

I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. our prayers are with you.

John was a wonderful friend to me since we began working together in Maynard over forty years ago. Well known for his kindness to others and of course his unique sense of humor, he was always fun to be with, whether at a SPED department meeting or at some god-awful PDP program. John was even more fun to hang out with after hours, at infamous establishments such as The Rusty Scupper, The 117 house, Alphonse's Powdermill, anywhere along Maynard's Main St. or wherever his many friends and amigos were gathering. Even with the wonderful personal memories of John that so many friends and family members have, his loss is a great sadness for all who knew him.

How I wish I could hear that Henny Youngman story one more time. Rest in peace, my friend.

The only way to correctly honor Johnny is to make a nonstop series of bad jokes, bad jokes, but good enough that you just can't stop laughing at the jokes, or were you laughing at him, or were you laughing because you didn't know what else to do because he just couldn't stop himself from letting those jokes keep coming at you, and then you were crying, tears of joy that he finally relented, if even for a moment...Say hi to Dad Johnny! RIP. Thanks for all the love you gave me growing up!!!

And to all the Sforza ladies, my heart and thoughts are with you. I know what it is to lose your Dad, and to see your Mom lose her husband. So hard. I really feel for you all so much!

Johnny was one of the most unique people you would ever meet. He was hilarious and had a million jokes off the top of his head and wasn't ashamed to repeat them over and over again. We will all miss his humour and fun loving personality. Condolences to Marianne, Amanda and Laura and his entire family.
