John Hixon Shaffer Jr., of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on June 25, 2024, at Casey House. He was born on July 31, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Washington D.C. John attended the Landon School in Bethesda, MD, the Bullis School in Potomac, MD, and Mercersberg Academy. He pursued his passion for Political Science at Windham College in Vermont.
John's career began as a congressional aide and speechwriter for Mendel Davis, US House of Representatives from South Carolina's 1st District. Later, he excelled as a sales executive in the hospitality industry.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa May Shaffer; his sons, John Hixon Shaffer III and Paul George Shaffer; daughter-in-law Brooke Willson Shaffer; and cherished grandchildren, Ella Carter Shaffer and George Willson Shaffer. He was preceded in death by his parents John Hixon Shaffer Sr. and Joan Shaffer.
Known for his kindness, gentle demeanor, and wonderful sense of humor, John was admired for his intelligence and exceptional writing abilities. He was a thoughtful, strong, and brave individual who always put others first, regardless of personal sacrifice.
John had a deep love for his family and animals, especially his dogs Gypsy, Chauncey, and Bowser. He was a passionate fan of the Washington Redskins (now Commanders), enjoyed music, coin collecting, and relished in culinary delights such as fettuccine alfredo, steak, and red wine. He found joy in learning from the History Channel, nurturing his garden, and spending peaceful moments at the beach.
Even as his health declined, John found ways to show his love through small gestures that spoke volumes about his caring nature and thoughtfulness towards those he cherished.
A private family gathering will be held to celebrate John's life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Montgomery Hospice- Casey House https://montgomeryhospice.org/donate-now/.
John's legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to have known him.
