John W. Showalter, 68, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 8:40 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Elkhart General Hospital.
John was born on Nov. 19, 1956, in Goshen, to Harold W. and Joan E. (Chittenden) Showalter. Surviving are sister, Debra Taylor of Goshen, niece, Jennifer (Larry) Gill, nephew, Steven Taylor, three great-nieces, three great-nephews, three great-great-nephews, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim.
John lived in Millersburg until the age of 12 before moving with his family to Valdosta, Georgia, where he later played football for the Valdosta High School Wildcats team. In 1975, the family moved back to Indiana and lived in Middlebury where John graduated from Northridge High School as part of the Bicentennial Class of 1976. In his earlier years, John worked for Johnson Controls of Goshen and Crown of Elkhart. Later in life, he worked as a driver for Das Dutchmen Essenhaus until he retired.
John had a great interest in aviation and attending airshows and also became a certified scuba diver. John loved cheering on his favorite football teams Notre Dame and the Chicago Bears. John enjoyed traveling and would often spend Labor Days at Cedar Point. He also loved visits with his parents at their home in Mission, Texas, during their retirement years. John will always be remembered for the kindness and love he showed for his family and friends.
There will be one hour of visitation prior to the 11 a.m. Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, Aug. 9, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury. Services will be conducted by Larry Gill. Interment will take place at a later date at Rice Cemetery, Elkhart.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be given to the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation. Online condolences may be offered at www.millerstewartfuneral home.com.
