John Simmon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home - Carson City on Feb. 11, 2026.
John Michael Simmon

Age 67, of Carson City, passed away Monday, February 9, 2026, at U of M Michigan Health-West in Wyoming. John was born on September 6, 1958, in Carson City, Michigan, to Charles and Ireta (Kipp) Simmon. He graduated from Carson City High School with the class of 1976.

On April 27, 1996, he married the love of his life, Kelly (Pung) Simmon, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Carson City. Their marriage, while not carefree, often appeared effortless. They were exactly what the other needed. John and Kelly naturally complimented one another - providing steady support and reassurance to one another while thriving on light-hearted laughter and quick-witted jokes. They rarely met a stranger and could often be found trolling the dirt roads in their golf cart mostly in search of a good time but also checking in on their neighbors. Their shared spirit is undeniably emulated by their children, Kyler and Kierra Simmon. Both are charismatic and readily equipped with tear-inducing one liners (often aimed at each other), but still carry an enviable, deep-rooted loyalty to one another and their parents. With Kelly, John cultivated a home that everyone felt welcome in and wanted to be a part of.

John's home is in the perfect setting to enjoy his favorite pastime: hunting deer, turkeys, coyotes, and squirrels. His chair had a view of both the open field and the big screen, where his favorite show, Gold Rush, or just about any western movie he stumbled upon was playing. He enjoyed playing solitaire daily but most of all spending as much time with his family as he could.

John worked for the State of Michigan Department of Corrections, retiring after more than 26 years of dedicated service.

He is survived by his wife: Kelly; son: Kyler, daughter: Kierra; sisters: Becky Carl, Kriss Wright, and Lois (John) Blanchard; brother: Joe (Livia) Simmon; mother-in-law: Sharon Pung; sister-in-law: Colette (Mark) Davis; brothers-in-law: Eric Pung, Greg Armbrustmacher; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Tim Simmon; brothers-in-law: Jim Carl and Dan Wright; father-in-law: Roy J. Pung; sister-in-law: Carmen (Pung) Armbrustmacher; niece: Sara Jane Blanchard; great-nephew: Zach Boeve; and great-niece: Emma Boeve.

While our hearts are heavy, we're comforted in knowing John is free from the health challenges he faced and defied. His absence will certainly be felt but his legacy will no doubt endure.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, February 16, 2026, at 11 am at St. Mary Catholic Church in Carson City. Interment will be in Maryknoll Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City.
