John David Smith, 63, was born on September 23, 1961. He grew up in Madison, Indiana, with his mom, dad, and four siblings. He has always been a family man and had great memories of their trips together finding fossils and rocks. He was active in boy scouts and eventually became an Eagle Scout. He learned valuable skills that has allowed him to serve and help others throughout his entire life.
John met his loving wife at Indiana University, and they got married in 1986. Together, they built a beautiful life, with three daughters, three sons-in-law, and five grandchildren. John grew up Catholic and raised his family in the faith he always knew. He lived for his family and always enjoyed any time he got to see them, whether taking vacations to Sanibel or just watching movies together. He was so present in their life and never missed an important event, whether soccer games, awards ceremonies, or music performances. He was a beloved "Poppy" to his five grandchildren, and he was often seen reading to them or showing off his goofy and childlike side.
One of John's shining attributes was his absolute selflessness. At the drop of a hat, he would drive to one of his daughters and help them with anything they needed. He was a hard worker and was often seen fixing up their houses, helping them with finances, or answering their questions. He was the provider and protector of his family and led with a quiet strength. He made sure his wife and family always had everything they needed and never let them go without.
John passed away suddenly from a rare clotting disorder on November 17, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife, daughters, and sons-in-law.
He is preceded in death by his father Charles Smith, his sister Donna Hysell (Smith), and numerous aunts and uncles. John is survived in death by his loving wife Beverly, of 38 years, his mother Carolyn Smith (Winkel), sister Jean Skirvin (Smith), brothers Mark and Keith (Beth), daughters Alicia (Keenan), Rachel (Paul), Amy (Christopher), and his grandchildren Dean, Anna, Rory, Luca, and Cecilia.
His family cannot thank their community enough for all they have done to help them in this time. They believe John's ability to care for his family lives on in this community that surrounds them. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May John's soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
