John Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 6, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father of John A. "Lonnie" Smith, grandfather, brother, and friend who left us on the 25th of October, 2025, at the age of 74. Lonnie, who was born on April 2nd, 1951, in Dover, New Jersey, spent his final moments surrounded by the warmth of the Sun City, Arizona sun, a place he had come to call home.
Lonnie's journey through life was marked by dedication and service, a testament to his character. As a young man, he proudly served as a fireman's apprentice and engine mechanic for the United States Navy aboard the USS Thor and the USS Aeolus. His time in the Navy not only shaped his work ethic but also instilled in him a profound sense of responsibility and commitment to others.
After his honorable discharge, Lonnie continued to apply his mechanical prowess as a maintenance manager at Stapling Machines and Allied Signal. His career culminated in his esteemed position as the head engineer at Tiffany & Co., from which he retired in 2013. Those who worked alongside Lonnie remember him as the go-to person for any problem, no matter how complex, his skills could tackle any problems.
Beyond his professional life, Lonnie was a man of many passions. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, the challenge of golfing, and the memories of camping. He was just as comfortable bowling as he was manning the grill. His love for the Dallas Cowboys and Ford vehicles was only matched by his sharp skills at the poker table, a pasttime that created many a laugh.
Above all, Lonnie was a family man. Predeceased by his parents, Elsie and Charlie Smith, he is survived by his siblings, Alfred "Skeeter" Smith, Harry Smith, Myrtle Ann Brandt, and Jackie Huffert. Lonnie's legacy continues through his daughters, Tiffany Canning and Tracey Smith, his ex son-in-law Mike Canning, and grandchildren, Ryan and Clare Canning, as well as Vinny, Gino, and Sal Cappuccio. Lonnie was a man who could fix anything but left us with the one thing we cannot repair-the void his departure has created in our hearts. His generous nature and handyman skills made him not just a pillar in his family but also in his community. As we say our final goodbyes, we reflect on a life well-lived, a life filled with love, laughter, and the satisfaction of a job well done.
Today, as we bid farewell to John A. "Lonnie" Smith, we remember a man who was the embodiment of generosity and skill. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his stories will be told for generations to come. Lonnie, you may have left this earth, but your spirit will forever remain with us in our hearts.
