John Smith Obituary

John P. Smith
John P. Smith, 72, of New Haven, also a longtime resident of North Haven, passed away on Friday, November 28th, 2025, at Yale New Haven Hospital. John was born in New Haven on December 13th, 1952, and was the son of the late James Smith and Catherine Delaney Smith. John graduated from North Haven High School in 1970. John worked at DeBaise's garage, North Haven, volunteered at North Haven Fire Department Northeast Co. 4, hauled milk, picked up milk from local dairy farms and delivered it to Knudsen's dairy in North Haven. Later he began his career with the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 2005. John then took on a part-time job as a logistics driver for PSEG Power until 2015. He truly loved his 20 years of retirement. John was an active and Life Member of the Hamden Fish and Game. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting throughout the country. John also loved Yale football, auto racing, and attending the Annual Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway, faithful fan of Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He was known for his humility, his gentle nature, and his unwavering willingness to help others. He was the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back without a second thought, expecting nothing in return. Those who knew him saw in him a heart of gold-steady, sincere, and full of compassion. He will be deeply missed by all. His memory will live on in the everyday acts of kindness he inspired in others. John is survived by his siblings, Thomas (Patricia) Smith, Margaret "Peggy" (Maksym) Dmytruk Jr., and James Smith, his nephews, Christopher Dmytruk and Maksym Dmytruk III (fiancé, Heather Walsh), Jeffrey (Christine) Smith, and niece, Sandra (Benjamin) Smith-Blake, as well as many great-nieces and -nephews. Besides his many close friends.
The visiting hours will be Thursday morning, December 4th, from 9:00 to 11:00 at The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. A Catholic funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home at 11:00. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the American Legion Post 76, 20 Church Street, North Haven, CT 06473, and/or to Blue Line Jars, www.bluelinejars.com. www.northhavenfuneral.com

Every day I worked with John, at some point during the day he would say something that would literally make me laugh out loud. He always had that twinkle in his eye when he quietly smiled! Rest in Peace John. Thank you for making the place not only bearable, but a lot of fun.

I had lots of fun with John. From our postal times to playing golf at Indian Springs weekly with great friends Jim and Mags. Knocking back a few beers together and sharing some stories with John my wife and me. Sending many thoughts and prayers to John and his family. I as well as many others will miss Smitty. God bless him and hopefully he is playing some heavenly golf.

John was such a nice guy. He was quiet but he got along with everyone. I enjoyed the get togethers at his house with the rest of the SPBS crew. My condolences to his friends and family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
