Dr. John Waddell Smith "Jack", passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, March 11, 2026 with his cherished wife at his side. Jack was the son of the late Thomas Henry Smith, Jr. and Ina Ione Waddell Smith in Delmont, PA. He was the brother to the late Jane Hartman (Bill). He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Debbie Smith, son Thomas Smith (Anne), and Clifford Smith (Heather). He was the proud grandfather to 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Jack was a proud WW lI veteran. He served in the Navy from 1944-46. He was a hospital corpsman and reached a rank of pharmacist mate second class.Following his discharge, he attended Washington and Jefferson College in PA, and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Dr. Smith was a well renowned General and Colon and Rectal Surgeon in Pittsburgh, PA.He was Chief of Surgery and a member of the executive committee at St. Francis Medical Center, and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He was on the surgical staff at Magee Women's Hospital, Shadyside Hospital, and St. Margaret Memorial Hospital. Dr. Smith was boarded by the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.Locally, in Pittsburgh, he was a member of the PA Medical Society, Pittsburgh Academy of Medicine, Pittsburgh Proctologic Society, Pittsburgh Surgical Society, and the Allegheny County Medical Society.
Upon retirement, he moved to Boca Raton, FL, where he enjoyed deep sea fishing on his sport fisherman boat, the"D.J" (Debbie & Jack). He loved golf and was an avid bicyclist. He later moved to Boynton Beach, FL.Dr. Smith's passion and love of medicine lead him and his wife to providing free medical surgical care for 14 years at the Migrant Association of South Florida and the Caridad Health Clinic in Boynton Beach, FL. He later moved to the Villages, Fl.He held memberships at St. Clair Country Club PA, Greensburg Country Club, PA, Oakmont Country Club, PA, Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club, Boca Raton, FL, and the Country Club of Florida, Boynton Beach Fl.
The family extends their gratitude to The Compassionate Care Hospice. Particularly, Megan, Jennifer, Ta, Marva, and Chaplin Chris.
Private services will be held in Delmont, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
