Born on January 16, 1946, in San Augustine, Texas, John Elton Sowell passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, in The Woodlands, Texas. A respected homebuilder and carpenter, John dedicated his life to crafting homes and creating spaces for families to thrive. His commitment to quality and detail in his work reflected his strong character, integrity, and work ethic. He especially enjoyed the simple pleasure of relaxing in his swimming pool, a reflection of the life he built through perseverance and determination.

Coming from a very poor upbringing, John’s life was a story of resilience and transformation. Through relentless hard work and sacrifice, he not only provided for his family but also reversed the cycle of generational poverty. Even after retirement, he remained active, keeping up with his renters and cultivating lasting relationships with the many tradesmen with whom he worked in his real estate business. That sense of connection and purpose fueled him throughout his later years.

John cherished his family above all else. He is survived by his beloved children, Travis Sowell and wife Tara, and Mary Lariviere and husband Ben. He found joy in the laughter and milestones of his grandchildren, Baret, Braddock, Maisyn, Colton, Kimber, and Ryne who brought him immense pride and happiness. His sister, Charlcie King, also survives him, holding dear the many memories they shared throughout their lives.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Janet Sowell, whose memory he cherished, and by his mother, Estella Hickman Sowell, who instilled in him the values of family, work ethic, and perseverance.

John Elton Sowell will be missed dearly. His life stands as a testament to what determination, dedication, and love can build. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he loved and in the homes, he built with his own hands.
