John H. Stanley

April 30, 1947 – February 14, 2026

John Henry Stanley, 78, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, in Traverse City. He was one of six children born to Henry John Stanley and Claire O'Connor Stanley and was raised primarily in Indianapolis.

After graduating from Xavier University, John proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he earned his Juris Doctor from the Robert H. McKinney School of Law. He was a trial lawyer and businessman in Indianapolis and had the honor of serving on the bench as a Commissioner for the Marion County Courts, Criminal Division.

John was an active and dedicated member of numerous civic organizations in both Indianapolis and Leland, Michigan. A lifelong lover of the arts, he performed in countless productions with the Dramatic Club of Indianapolis. He also served as President of the University Club of Indianapolis and as Commodore of the Leland Yacht Club. An avid sailor, John was especially proud to be a member of the crew of the Leading Lady of Leland, which competed in fourteen Chicago to Mackinac races, winning its class twice. Summers spent in Leland with his family were among his greatest joys.

Above all, John was most proud of his children. He is survived by his three children: Ian; Caitlin Early (Theo); and Alec (Abbey Matusik); and by his beloved grandson, Rafferty Early, whom he adored.

A private family service will be held at a future date.
