John J. Stewart, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on
December 19, 2024, in Lake Grove at the age of 93. Born on March 9, 1931, in Brooklyn, New
York, John lived a life rich with love and dedication to his family and community.
At just 17 years old, John answered the call of duty by joining the Army during a pivotal time in
history. He served bravely for three and a half years in Korea before returning home to build a
life filled with purpose. His journey began as a bricklayer—a trade he embraced until he was
ready for new challenges at the age of 34 when he joined the Suffolk County Police
Department. Over his distinguished career there, John worked tirelessly to rise through the
ranks to become Assistant Chief of Detectives—an achievement that reflected not only his
commitment but also his unwavering integrity.
In June of 1954, John married Alice—the love of his life—with whom he shared an incredible
partnership that lasted over six decades until her passing left him heartbroken. Together they
raised three children: John Jr.(Debbie), Michael (Patti), and Deborah (Billy). Their home was
always filled with laughter and warmth as they nurtured their family values.
After retiring , John and Alice found paradise in Punta Gorda, Florida where they enjoyed
serene days fishing on beautiful waters surrounded by nature's splendor. After nearly three
decades under sunny skies along tranquil shores—where memories were made—they returned
back north seeking closeness with family once more.
In recent years following Alice’s passing after sixty-one wonderful years together—he moved
into Debbie’s home where she cared lovingly for him alongside Billy and their three grandsons
who adored him deeply.
John's legacy lives on through his seven cherished grandchildren: Sean; Sarah; Emily (Ryan);
Anthony (Amanda); Nicholas; William; and Zhenna. Each week became special as John's son
initiated family dinners—a tradition that brought everyone together around delicious meals
infused with love—and allowed them all to bask in their grandfather’s wisdom and guidance.
John leaves behind an emptiness no one can fill but is remembered fondly by those whose
lives he touched.
