John Newcomb Strobel, 98, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025.
He was born on September 27, 1927, in Pelham Manor, New York, to Mildred (Rock) Strobel and Frank Charles Strobel.
John was part of the Greatest Generation. At just 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1945 to 1946 during the final chapter of World War II. Service became a defining theme of his life.
He attended Florida Southern College before graduating from Nichols Junior College in 1949. In the 1950s, he worked as a buyer for J.C. Penney in New York City, later spending nearly three decades as a sales manager for a division of Sara Lee Corporation.
Public service was woven into his everyday life. John was a Republican Party Committeeman for the Town of Pelham, a member of the vestry at the Church of the Redeemer (Episcopal) in Pelham, and a Big Brother to three young men in New York.
After relocating to Scottsdale, Arizona, on November 19, 1983, he continued giving back-volunteering more than 6,500 hours with the Scottsdale Police Department over a ten-year period, serving with the American Red Cross disaster unit, and working as a transporter for Scottsdale Healthcare. He was also an active member of PTOP (Prime Timers of Phoenix).
John is preceded in death by his longtime partner and companion William George Teeters, his brothers, Donald Edwin Strobel and Frank Charles Strobel.
He is survived by his nine nieces and nephews, and by his beloved cat, Dillon.
