Dad I think about every single day. Before Mom passed away we would talk on the phone every single day. I miss not being able to ask your advice on things so much. You molded me in the man I am today. I do find comfort knowing that you are with are Heavenly Father. I love and miss you . Derek.

Mr. Swindle, I think about you often when I think my life is troubling. You always had something positive to say and I miss that. Thinking of you still after 6 years. Thanks for teaching me what's really important in life. May our great Lord continue to keep you in the palms of his hands

John recruited me in Portland, ME in 1957. I visited with him a couple of times while home on leave in Naples, ME. Otherwise, I lost contact with him. Then in about 2008, he wrote a letter to the Postmaster in Naples inquiring if any of my family still lived in town. My mother got the letter and sent it to me. From the contact info in the letter, I emailed John in Lacey, WA. We exchanged emails for several years up until Barbara Passed away. When I learned he had passed away, I was saddened by the news. I only served 4 years in the Corps but I don't regret a minute of it. I am forever thankful for John's persistence in recruiting me. It doesn't surprise me that John retired with the rank of SgtMaj. He was a Marine's Marine and it wouldn't have surprised me if he made Commandant He was a "go getter"...

I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in November, 1957 at the USMC Recruiting Station on Pearl Street in Portland Maine. SSgt John Swindle was my recruiter. I served four years and was discharged in 1962 as a Cpl. I then worked for the USMC at their HQ for a little over a year then went into law enforcement where I stayed for 24 years. I retired with the rank of Major. Sometime during the 1990's, John wrote to the Postmaster in Naples inquiring about me. The letter was forwarded to my mother who then forwarded it to me. I contacted John via email and we stayed in touch right up until his wife Barbara passed away. I was unable to stay in touch with him after that. He was a wonderful man and was an inspiration to me to do well. I'm proud of my time in the Marine Corps and brag about it to this day. I'm sure John had many friends and will be greatly missed. May God bless him and may he rest in peace.

It was only recently I found out about John's passing. I was privileged and honored to have known a wonderful and caring man. He shared many Marine Corps stories with my husband who also served in the Marine Corp. He was a proud Marine and gentle giant of a man. He will truly be missed.
