John Tanner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cook & Son-Pallay Funeral Home - Columbus on Mar. 3, 2026.
John Tanner, born February 23,1946, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026 at the age of 80 with his wonderful niece Roxanne Dodson by his side.

He found joy in life's simple pleasures - especially time spent on the golf course, where he could often be found perfecting his swing and enjoying the beautiful day. Golf wasn't just a game to him; it was a passion that reflected his patience, determination, and love of the outdoors.

When he wasn't golfing, he enjoyed playing pool, bowling and spending time with his family.

He was also a loyal and enthusiastic fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Saturdays in the fall were often spent cheering on his team, proudly wearing scarlet and gray. Win or lose, his Buckeye pride never wavered.

Above all, John cherished his family. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved - offering advice, sharing stories, and creating memories that will live on in our hearts. He especially loved spending time with his great nieces and nephews, who visited often and brought laughter, energy, and so much joy into his life. Those visits meant the world to him, and he treasured every moment spent watching them grow.

He is survived by His sons David (Pam) Tanner, Mark Tanner, & Michael Tanner, his sister Tish Wymer, grandkids Jennifer, Lazara, Mearaya, Justin, and Taylee. His great grandkids J.D., Aiden, Zalara, Dennis, & Laraya. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Carey and Herbert Tanner, his wife Joyce, his brothers Michael, Timmy and Rick Tanner, sisters Sandy Dodson and Diane Randall, and his granddaughter Makayla.

A funeral/memorial service will be held on [date] at Cook and Sons located at 1631 Parsons Avenue, Columbus Ohio . Please wear your Buckeye best.

Though we will miss his steady voice, his easy smile, and the sound of him cheering on the Buckeyes, we take comfort in knowing his legacy lives on in his family and the love he gave so freely.

We imagine heaven a little louder now - perhaps even an 'O-H!' echoing in the distance.
